The people in China didn't seem to mind the casualties during the great leap forward as much as other mass casualties in that same century, as most of the attention is taken. The fact that famine was what whipped out a lot of people, and that made people not blame it on mass murder since there wasn't direct killing. Mao's focuses produced this and I believe it should be ranked right next to Stalin's and Hitler's mass casualty events, since it was the ruler who mainly produced this situation.
The Japanese came into the region of manchuria. Their stay there was a big problem for China. With a long time there, the current power's focus wasn't on them, but in shutting down the CCP. This meant that the Japanese had a long nazi-like reign. With the end of the Japanese stay, people wanted change and as their current leaders were too focused on dealing with the Communist party instead of attending to the occupation problem. The CCP would come into power and lead China with a Communist ideal. The Japanese helped by setting a problem that wasn't attended to by the current government and the completely opposite government strategy to communism.
